Butterfly Garden

At Clearwater Community Gardens, the Butterfly Garden blooms as a quiet sanctuary designed to support all stages of a butterfly’s life—egg, caterpillar, chrysalis, and adult. Located in our Common Area (managed by the Pollinator Garden Team), this garden within the gardens reflects our efforts to create a welcoming pollinator habitat, sustain native species, and offer natural educational experiences to young and old.

Planting for All Life Stages

Our garden includes a thoughtfully curated mix of native nectar plants, host plants for larval feeding, and flowering species chosen for seasonal variety and support of the butterfly population. Monarchs rely on milkweed, while Painted Ladies feed on diverse blooms like zinnias and verbena. Many skippers, sulfurs, hairstreaks, and fritillaries also visit regularly, each supported by tailored food and shelter zones.

We prioritize native and non-invasive species, ensuring ecological harmony within Clearwater’s urban ecosystem. With varied bloom heights, color palettes, and blooming periods, this garden offers year-round nectar sources and attracts all types of pollinators: butterflies, moths, bees, and more.

Habitat Features & Visitor Appeal

Designed with butterfly behavior in mind, the garden includes:

  • Windbreak shrubs and a sunlit clearing to create warm micro-climates for basking.
  • “Puddling zones”—shallow muddy patches rich in minerals—where male butterflies gather.
  • Sheltered corners layered with leaf litter or low brush for overwintering and chrysalis support.

At least a couple times per year we host monarch butterfly releases where children and adults interact with young butterflies as they start their journey into the world. It’s a magical experience!

Environmental Impact & Stewardship

  • Supports local pollinators: By offering habitat for butterflies and their host plants, the garden enhances pollinator diversity across Clearwater.
  • Ecosystem services: Butterfly visits aid pollination for adjacent fruit trees, herbs, and vegetables within the Gardens.
  • Ecological learning: Visitors gain awareness of the butterfly life cycle, native plant benefits, and sustainable habitat design.

How You Can Engage

Here are ways to participate in our Pollinator Garden:

  • Volunteer to work with the Pollinator Team: Join garden maintenance—planting, weeding, mulching, and monitoring—for a more vibrant habitat.
  • Attend our volunteer events: Seasonal tours, planting days, or workshops help support our pollinators year round.
